I once dated a guy who wanted to diagnose me as a narcissist because I liked my own writing.
DateD – as in past tense, because of course I had to leave this f*ckr immediately. The situation was almost comedic, if it wasn’t so tragic, as we were sitting outside his WG on a bench, him - a self-proclaimed "director" - frantically pulling up graphics on his phone to show me the nine signs of narcissism, one of which was "grandiosity."
“B”, he said. “YOU THINK YOUR OWN WRITING IS GENIAL! WHO DOES THAT? YOU ARE A NARCISSIST, LOOK AT THIS GRAPHIC FROM THE INTERNET!!”
f*ckr I’m a published author, my 4th book is coming in November and I’m only 32. I have two f*ckng follow-up book-contracts and work as an author FULL TIME, no corporate hustle aside.
What do you think I think of my own writing? Do you want me to think I suck, because I’m “female”. Do you want me insecure, shall I beg for you to like my prose? I don’t. And I also don’t care if you think I was any good.
I am.
I know that.
My publisher(s) know that.
My ex-publisher(s) know that.
The internet knows that.
Every other f*ng guy I’ve seen since knows that and doesn’t stand in my way of being successful.
So, fellow female writers and artists, what have the "guys you've dated" said about your work?
